The Whiskey Rebellion began in 1791 when Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Hamilton forced farmers who used whiskey as a way of exchange to start out paying an extra tax. Using whiskey as a type of unofficial forex played an integral role in securing the livelihoods of many farmers, because whiskey was more straightforward to transport and sell than grain in its herbal state.

The reason why for this new tax was to increase the govt's energy and fund the taking up of warfare debt from states who had no longer paid. Many of the farmers suffering from this tax had been also warfare veterans, they usually had been adamant about the battle towards taxation without local representation.

The rebellion culminated in 1794 when greater than 500 armed males attacked the guarded home of a tax inspector. President George Washington sent peace commissioners to barter with the rebels, while simultaneously leading an army of 13,000 infantrymen to end the rebellion through force if necessary. The looming confrontation was have shyed away from, as rebels ended up disbanding sooner than Washington's military arrived.
